It’s an oil painting of a female subject (my friend Melissa) with some feathery surprises. This speed painting demo shows the blocking in stage of the process - essentially the base coat. Once it dries, I will go back in and add more detail, so come back and check out the finished piece soon! --- Step into the weird and wonderful world of artist Paul Richmond, where anything could go down -- even a pin-up boys' pants! We're all a little high on paint fumes around here, so grab a brush and join the painting party! Want more? Fresh Coat | War Paint Series

Image
Fresh Coat , oil on canvas by Paul Richmond Fresh Coat is the newest piece in my War Paint series, exploring ideas of masculinity, strength, and courage. I'm really enjoying loosening up and being more expressive with these paintings. I start by just scraping paint across the canvas with a palette knife and then build the image from there. Here's a pic of this one in the early stages. Fresh Coat in progress Fresh Coat measures 30" x 24." The original painting and prints are available through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery HERE . Additional print sizes are available in my online store HERE . Special thanks to Patrick Butler for modeling for this piece.  I'm also excited to announce that the War Paint series will be featured in a two-person exhibition this summer at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provincetown along with works by one of my favorite watercolorists, Kevin Peterson . The exhibit coincides with P-Town's Carnival, and the opening recep...

Brave Face | War Paint Series

Image
Brave Face , oil on canvas by Paul Richmond I'm back in the studio and painting with a vengeance! Here's the first piece in my new War Paint series -- an expressive exploration of strength, masculinity, and courage. I am inspired by the variety of ways in which people summon their inner strength to prepare for battle, and through this body of work, I hope to expand upon the notion of what "being tough" really means. Brave Face is an oil painting on canvas that measure 24" x 30." The original painting and prints are available through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery HERE . Additional print sizes are available in my online store HERE . A big thank you to the fantastic models who were willing to get messy during the photo shoot for this series: Edwin Clark, Aaron Anderson, Brian Williams, and Patrick Butler! Here are some detail images:

Shy

Image
Sometimes when a city boy goes to the country, hilarity ensues. This illustration, the cover art for John Inman's novel Shy , gives the expression "down on the farm" a whole new meaning. Since this piece had all the elements of my Cheesecake Boys series - namely, a handsome pinup boy with his pants falling down - I thought it would make a great limited-edition print to add to my collection. So don't be shy...visit my online store  here to purchase this down-home delight today! Want to see how a novel cover is born? Here's a sneak peek at the process. If you'd like to read more about my work as a cover artist and see additional behind-the-scenes pics, check out my Cover Artist Spotlight on the site Joyfully Jay . You'll likely be seeing more of my cover illustrations pop up soon as print offerings. I have been a busy boy this year creating covers for a slew of novels by Dreamspinner Press . I freelanced for them for several years, but ever sin...

Winter Breeze

Image
"Winter Breeze," by Paul Richmond The best way to get the upper hand in a snowball fight is to catch your opponent off guard! The Cheesecake Boy in my new holiday piece "Winter Breeze" makes it far too easy when his pants unexpectedly fall to the ground, revealing his festive Christmas underwear! Stuff these cuties in your stocking by ordering a limited-edition print HERE . And check out some other holiday-themed Cheesecake Boy pieces HERE . This illustration will also appear on the cover of the upcoming holiday anthology "Evergreen" by Dreamspinner Press .

Groweth Pains

Image
Groweth Pains , by Paul Richmond Like many gay men who grew up in the 80's, I had a big crush on Kirk Cameron (a.k.a. Mike Seaver on the sitcom "Growing Pains"). So now that he has grown into a self-righteous bigot, proclaiming that homosexuality is "detrimental and ultimately destructive," I feel betrayed. And if the Jesus he so frequently speaks on behalf of is perched on a cloud listening to the wayfaring former-sitcom star's remarks, I can only imagine that he might want to put him over his knee and teach him a lesson. Perhaps it's just a phase for Kirk - nothing that a few growing pains to the backside can't help him overcome. Limited-edition prints of Groweth Pains are available here in my online store.

Ringmasters & Fabulous Oddities

Image
This Friday, July 6, my exhibit with Thomas Acevedo opens at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provincetown. The reception begins at 7 PM, and the gallery is located at 432 Commercial St. Visit their website for more details. Here's a bit more about my new series that will be featured in the show: With a nod to vintage circus, sideshow, and burlesque posters, my series Ringmasters & Fabulous Oddities portrays scantily-clad male figures as star attractions. Their roles are varied – from The Snake Charmer with his cool, seductive gaze to The Bear Tamer , shown losing control of his act (and his pants!). This series also features two contemporary male burlesque dancers, Tom DeLish and Bobbie Burlesque, both of whom entice their audience to new understandings of male sexuality. By placing men center-stage as both storytellers and objects of desire, I seek to challenge traditional ideologies around gender roles. And the sumptuous imagery of the big top provides a perfect setting for ...

The Snake Charmer

Image
"The Snake Charmer," oil on canvas by Paul Richmond, 40" x 30" My new painting, “The Snake Charmer,” is the latest in a series of circus/sideshow inspired pieces for my show this summer at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery.  I’m enjoying putting my own spin on this theme, in this case modifying the traditional snake charmer image with a tattooed rendition of my own “charmer,” my partner Dennis.  “The Snake Charmer” is available to purchase through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery. Visit my page on their site for details. It will be held until the exhibition this summer, opening July 6 and closing July 18. Small, medium, and large limited-edition prints are currently available in my online store .

Testimony

Image
I recently created this short video for the Courage Campaign’s Testimony Project .  Testimony seeks to create a map of stories from LGBT Americans and allies across the country.  In collaboration with partner organizations, and using the stories of the American public, Testimony seeks to show the shift in public acceptance of gays and lesbians as many equality cases make their way to the Supreme Court. The artwork I’ve created throughout my life is an important part of my story, so I gathered a sampling from the archives (a.k.a. my parents’ basement) to include in the video. It was fun to look back on all of the older paintings I did as a child with the guidance of my mentor, Linda Regula. She taught me how to tell a story through visual art, and I've been doing that ever since. Let me share a few here: Snow White , age 4 I loved the Snow White story when I was a kid, and often imagined that I was the famed fairy tale princess. My rendition of “Someday my Prince ...
